1. Asking deep questions and not always providing an answer while teaching is a good tactic because it encourages students to become self-regulated learners. Asking deep and interesting questions increases student motivation and it makes the students not only think about what they are learning, but also how they learn. They come up with new learning strategies to arrive at an answer and can transfer those strategies to other areas of school and life. Certain questions that are needed require listening or reading, create visual images, and make the student figure out what is most important. These questions should be used when the student is in the “forethought” and “performance control” phase. Performance control is when the student has to figure out how to focus on the task at hand and not become distracted. By asking deep questions as this point, you are helping the student stay on track and not lose focus.
